What should I do if I find chipped tile pieces within the mosaic sheets during installation?

Learn why minor tile chipping can occur, how to use your included Artaic Repair Kit, and the best practices for replacing damaged tiles before grouting.

One of the most attractive characteristics of custom mosaic is the tiny variations and imperfections that can be found in the small mosaic tiles. Additionally, natural materials like stone inherently feature organic variations and slight edge imperfections. While Artaic enforces strict quality control to minimize out-of-spec tiles, a certain amount of variation is desirable. Installers should aim for a "regular irregularity" or “uniform nonuniformity” in the look of the installed mosaic, that gives the piece so much character.

Minor chips are often within industry tolerance and become unnoticeable once grouted. However, for tiles with significant damage that warrant a replacement, here is how to handle them:

  • Utilize the Repair Kit: Note that minor damage can occasionally occur during transit or on-site handling. Every Artaic shipment includes a complimentary Repair Kit. This kit contains a minimum of 1% extra tile quantity for each color used in your specific project.
  • Swap Before Grouting: If you spot a significantly damaged tile, simply remove it from the sheet and replace it with an undamaged piece from your repair kit before adhesion and grouting.
  • Conduct a Pre-Grouting Walkthrough: We strongly recommend performing a final walkthrough with the owner or customer before applying grout. Use this time to identify and mark any areas for rework, including chipped tiles or minor alignment issues, while they are still easy to fix. 🛠️
💡 Pro-Tip: Addressing replacements during a pre-grouting walkthrough ensures a flawless finish and prevents the need for tedious post-grout repairs!
